Water safety is a skill for life
Prepare your child for the unexpected in the water.
I never expected an otter attack in Lake Tahoe to change the way I think about water safety. But it reminded me of something I teach every family: you can’t predict what will happen around water, so the best thing you can do is be prepared for the unexpected. Whether your child is swimming in a pool, playing at the lake, or simply near water, layers of protection matter. I created this Water Safety Guide to give parents practical, simple steps you can take to help keep your children safer in and around the water and to prepare for ISR Self-Rescue lessons.

A perspective shaped by real life
You can’t always predict what will happen in the water.
Lynnette knows this firsthand. Her experience being attacked by an otter in Lake Tahoe reinforced something she teaches every day: preparation matters, and water competency is a skill worth developing at every age.
Preparing children for the unexpected is not about teaching them to be afraid of water. It is about helping them become capable, confident, and prepared.
The parent’s gifT
Give your child a skill they can carry for life.
Self-Rescue is not simply about what a child can do in a swimming lesson today. It is about building skills through practice and development that continue to serve them as they grow. These skills are a gift parents can give their children for life.

Why Self-Rescue matters
Preparation changes what’s possible. Preparation changes what’s possible.
A child’s water journey is not a single lesson. It is a foundation that deepens with time, practice, and thoughtful support.

Water safety is built in layers.
ISR is one important layer in a broader water-safety approach.
No child or adult is ever “drown-proof,” and no layer replaces active supervision.

Start with one steady step
Prepare your child for the
unexpected.
You may not be able to predict every situation your child will encounter around water. But you can give them skills, practice, and preparation that can stay with them for life.
